Conscience Visit to Prison from Our Bursa Volunteers

On Wednesday, August 28, the visit to Bursa Prison for the volunteers of the Vicdan Foundation was an unforgettable experience. Despite the hot weather conditions, the determination and love of our volunteers broke the heavy atmosphere of the cold and gloomy prison waiting room. Three volunteers, one female and two male, empathized with the people waiting for their loved ones and witnessed their pain and hope.

In the first moments of the visit, two middle-aged men attracted attention. The difference between these two men was that they had come to prison to repay the debt of loyalty they felt to their friends who had grown up together since primary school. The word "loyalty" seemed to come to life in the stance of these two men. The strong bonds that the Vicdan Foundation creates between people and the depth of the foundation's mission were once again evident.

Another familiar face was among those who greeted our volunteers during the visit. The brother of a man who sells eggs door to door was inside. A heartfelt greeting was conveyed and at that moment it became clear that even being in prison could not weaken the bond between brothers. This sincere greeting showed that solidarity exists even in the most difficult times.

Another visitor was a retired worker uncle. The dignified look in his eyes and his sincerity left a deep impression on our volunteers. The uncle explained that one of his sons was in prison, and that the trials of his other son and two daughters-in-law were ongoing. He expressed his belief in his country and justice with the following words: "This country is also our country, our consciences are clear." These words revealed his trust in his family and his unyielding stance against injustice.

Our female volunteer told with deep admiration the conversation she had with an old uncle's daughter-in-law. The love, loyalty and courage of that bride showed us once again how much value we have for humanity. At the end of the visit, it was understood that the love and faith these people carry can be a ray of hope even in the darkest places.

This prison visit was an important lesson not only for the people inside, but also for the volunteers and those waiting outside. The people sitting in the waiting room managed to turn even a cold and gloomy place into a hope that heralded spring with the love, compassion, faith and courage they carried in their hearts. This visit once again revealed how deep and important the purpose of the Conscience Foundation is. As long as these people exist, it is impossible to lose hope. Conscience will continue to be protective like the shade of a tree and life-giving like a river in a world that is always scorched by pain.

Bursa volunteers' plans include not only prison visits, but also visits to nursing homes and Romani communities. These activities were held in the prison waiting room, and our volunteers' journey of conscience will continue with new stops.
