Exemplary Behavior of the Week: Being the Voice of the Other

İletişim

The demonstration held in Stockholm, Sweden, to protest the attacks on Gaza was chosen as the exemplary act of conscience of the week by the Conscience Foundation. Hundreds of Swedish activists gathered in Odenplan Square on August 10, 2024, to stand with the Palestinian people who are oppressed under Israeli attacks and draw attention to the oppression they are experiencing.

This protest stands out as an act of empathy and solidarity towards the Palestinian people, who are seen as the “other” by a large part of Swedish society. By marching to oppose and condemn the inhumanity that innocent civilians in Gaza are subjected to, the demonstrators gave voice to the collective conscience.

Each week, exemplary acts of conscience are selected by the Conscience Foundation volunteers and evaluated according to specific criteria. These criteria consider whether an act contains basic conscience elements such as empathy, altruism and agency. This selection process is carried out by our volunteers and the most remarkable act of conscience of that week is determined. This protest in Stockholm stood out as a significant example that met all these criteria and was chosen as the act of conscience of the week.

Protest can be considered not only a reaction, but also a concrete and positive action. Swedish activists have taken action against the situation by understanding the feelings and difficulties of Palestinians. This action represents a sacrifice for the good of others and an effort to create positive change in society. At the same time, this conscientious stance can inspire others and pave the way for similar solidarity movements.

As the Conscience Foundation, we support and see it as our duty to promote such humane and empathetic stances. This action in Stockholm was chosen as the exemplary act of conscience of the week as an important example of a society defending the rights of people it sees as “others.” We salute everyone involved in this fight for justice and human rights.
