This week, as the Conscience Foundation, we choose as an exemplary act the action of Boston University Professor Nathan Phillips in the USA as a powerful voice of global conscience. Professor Phillips began a meaningful hunger strike in support of Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish university student who is being held in custody in the USA for her support for Palestine.
Professor Phillips' humanitarian stance against Rümeysa Öztürk's freedom to pay the price for speaking out against the just cause of the Palestinian people is commendable. His action is more than just support for a student; it is an emphasis on freedom of thought and expression. It reminds us once again that, even though we are in different geographies, remaining sensitive and speaking out against injustice is a universal responsibility.
Professor Phillips’ honorable initiative is a powerful example of how an individual conscience can turn into a global solidarity movement. Her hunger strike not only draws attention to the injustice experienced by Rümeysa Öztürk, but also gives strength to all voices in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
As the Vicdan Foundation, we wholeheartedly support Professor Nathan Phillips' meaningful and courageous act, and wish Rümeysa Öztürk to be freed as soon as possible. We believe that the solidarity of conscientious people and their belief in justice will overcome injustice sooner or later.
