Mujahid Bilici: "God Died, But Reborn as Conscience"

Following his speech on the concept of conscience at the Purple Room Conscience Conversations, Mücahit Bilici addressed this profound subject in a column. Bilici explained how the death of God is related to the birth of conscience from a philosophical and moral perspective, while emphasizing the importance of this process in human history.

Focusing on Nietzsche’s statement that “God is dead,” Bilici states that this statement has been misunderstood. This statement does not refer to the absence of God, but to the replacement of the moral order represented by God in society by an internal guide such as conscience. He argues that in the modern age, God has ceased to be a direct authority and has become an internal guide that enables individuals to reckon with their own conscience.

Bilici says that the real message of Nietzsche, who declared God dead, is that God has not disappeared, but has been reborn as conscience. He states that people no longer resort to an external authority, but rather to an internal accounting mechanism, namely conscience. This transformation increases the importance of moral autonomy and individual responsibility, while enabling people to restructure their relationships with both themselves and society.
