Twelfth Meeting of Conscience

The Twelfth Conscience Meeting was held at the Conscience Foundation on May 25, 2024. Participants from different identities came together at the meeting and strengthened their sense of empathy and conscience by sharing the difficulties they experienced and the injustices they faced. Here are some of the stories and thoughts that stood out in this meeting:




Abdullah's Questioning of Conscience Abdullah explained the injustices he experienced during the Statutory Decree process and how his conscience strengthened during this process. "My conscience has strengthened during this process and my ability to empathize has increased. I understand people better. One of the basic characteristics of combative people is not to remain silent and to constantly talk and voice their problems," he said, expressing the transformation he experienced.


Murat Sirkecioğlu, a former bank employee, shared his experiences and how he decided to become a writer. He said, "I want to reach out to children and young people and touch their lives. I try to tell them about dreaming and the importance of reading books," and showed how he emerged from the difficult process stronger.


Haceranlı Karaşal's Struggle Haceranlı Karaşal spoke about her experiences as the daughter of a revolutionary father and as a wife who was victimized by the Statutory Decree. She stated that her husband was unjustly arrested and that she herself had experienced great difficulties during this process. She emphasized the importance of the amnesty by saying, "Turkey needs social peace and a general amnesty."


Emine's Familial Devastation Emine is a Turkish teacher who was dismissed by a Statutory Decree. Her five brothers and father were arrested on the same night. "This was a great trauma for us. My brothers' imprisonment and the pain our family went through are unforgettable," she said, expressing the deep pain they experienced.


Resul Haksoyler's Feelings Resul Haksoyler expressed his disappointments and the inconsistencies he sees in the Muslim community. "Islam is a true religion, but how can people become Muslims because of the attitudes of Muslims? I question it with my own conscience and that's why I get strength from being together with conscientious people," he said.


Hasan Hüseyin's Story Hasan Hüseyin explained the difficulties he experienced and the marginalizing attitudes of society. "Even your own brother treats you like a terrorist. During this process, I learned to stay away from political ideologies and discrimination," he said, expressing his deep disappointment.


After the meeting, participants emphasized the value of the Conscience Meetings at the Conscience Foundation and stated that these meetings should continue. These meetings, based on conscience and empathy, enable people from different segments of society to come together, understand and support each other. These steps taken towards creating positive change in society will continue as a symbol of hope and solidarity.
